Finding Balance Between Big and Small Tasks
Yesterday, I shared my struggle with focusing on big tasks while ignoring the small ones, only to end up with an unfinished big task and a mountain of neglected smaller ones. Today, I decided to write on how to strike a balance.
Balancing big and small tasks may feel like juggling a watermelon and a bunch of grapes. You don’t want to drop any, but you can’t hold them the same way. Big tasks demand deep focus, while small tasks require quick bursts of energy. It’s easy to get lured into one and neglect the other, but the key is to create a system that works for both.
Some have suggested that prioritization plays a huge role in finding balance, and I agree. But here’s the big question: What should I prioritize? The big tasks or the small ones? I believe having a priority list is okay, but it doesn’t have to be rigid. If you only prioritize big tasks, the small ones will pile up. Instead, give smaller tasks designated slots in your schedule to ensure they get the attention they deserve.

I’ve also learned that sometimes, the problem with big tasks is their intimidating size. Breaking them into smaller, manageable pieces can make them feel less overwhelming. Treat each piece as its own task, and you’ll see progress without neglecting the smaller duties.
For some, the inability to say “no” is the root cause of the imbalance. Let’s be honest, the list often grows because we say yes to everything. Instead of jumping on every task in the name of honor or obligation, evaluate what’s truly essential at the moment and let go of what isn’t.
These are my thoughts so far. Do you have strategies for finding a balance between big and small tasks?
